What is Passover?
Passover is the longest continuously celebrated feast in human history, predating God giving the Ten Commandments to Moses. Along with Pentecost and Tabernacles, Passover is one of the three obligatory feasts to which all of Israel’s males were to appear before the Lord. Often thought of, inaccurately, as “the feasts of Israel”, they are actually “The Feasts of the LORD”. The Old Testament Scriptures that deal with this feast are Exodus 12:1-14; 21-29; Leviticus 23:4-5; Numbers 33:3; Deuteronomy 16:1-8. This feast is fulfilled in the following New Testament scriptures - Matthew 26:1-2; 17:75; 27:1-66; Mark 14-15; Luke 22-23; John 18-19; & Hebrews 11:28.
Passover commemorates the Exodus of the Jewish people from Egyptian slavery into an evolving statehood. It is celebrated on the evening of the 14th in the first month of the Jewish calendar, often called Abib or Nisan, or Hodesh Ha’aviv. The feast begins on the full moon, which is why the feast moves around in our modern calendar.
Passover reminds the Jewish people of the last meal their ancestors ate while still in bondage in pagan Egypt. It also reminds them of the exodus out of Egypt and into the land promised by God that is to remain their perpetual heritage. It is the story of God’s redemption of His people.
Jesus came to earth to be a Passover Lamb! When John introduced Jesus He said, “Behold the LAMB!” Paul wrote: “Christ, OUR Passover Lamb, has been sacrificed. Therefore LET US celebrate the feast...” (1 Cor. 5:7-8) In Rev. 4-5, all heaven worships Jesus as the LAMB that was slain.
Passover is all about JESUS!
When the blood of Jesus is “on the doorpost” of your life, God delivers YOU from the destroyer! God gave us Passover as a way to celebrate and experience all that Jesus did for us!
The form of the Seder has been consistent for over two thousand years. The Lord Jesus sanctified this form of Passover and expressed His great desire to eat Passover with His disciples before His suffering (Luke 22:15). It was at the Passover that Jesus established what Christians know as Communion or the Lord’s Supper. This is built around the matzah (the unleavened bread) and the third cup, the Cup of Redemption. Students of Scripture will recall that Jesus declined to partake of the fourth cup - the Cup of Praise - until He returns in His glory and establishes His everlasting Kingdom.
Note: We have no desire to go back into legalism, or Zionism, hence this is a Messianic Seder, not an “orthodox” one.
ALSO: It was the Council of Whitby in 664 that abolished the right of Christians to celebrate Passover instead of the pagan Roman fertility rites of the original Easter.
Today, Christians are taking back what religion stole.
